Astros Prospect Getting Chance to Make Roster
Sam Navarro-USA TODAY Sports

There aren't a whole lot of spots on the Houston Astros' roster up for grabs.

That's what happens when a team is loaded with established star players who are still in their prime years and project to play the majority of the season.

However, depth is always important in a 162-game schedule.

There are still some bench roles that can be claimed by players who perform well during this Spring Training period.

But because of how firm the roster already is, the Astros decided to make some early cuts with many of their top prospects getting sent home.

One of those who notably is remaining in camp is Houston's No. 6 rated minor leaguer, Joey Loperfido.

The versatile defender and power hitter as quickly risen through the ranks in their farm system, making it to Triple-A in his second full season of professional baseball.

That Triple-A experience has been an important precursor for the Astros to call up a prospect to their MLB team.

He put together his best year in 2023 with a slash line of .278/.370/.510, 25 home runs, 55 extra-base hits, 78 RBI and 27 stolen bases.

Loperfido has built upon that performance with a strong showing so far in Spring Training.

Over his nine at-bats, he's recorded four hits, one for a double, and has driven in one run. He's also walked three times and has three strikeouts.

His defensive versatility could also earn him a bench role as he's played multiple positions across the infield and outfield during his minor league career.

Houston seems to really be giving Loperfido a look to make the Opening Day roster since they held onto him in camp.

Even if he starts his year in the minors, he seems like a strong candidate to beĀ  called up to make his Major League debut at some point this season.
