Athletics All-Star goes down with major injury

The Athletics’ 2026 season just took another dramatic turn. Amid the looming MLB trade deadline, A’s All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers is expected to miss some time after suffering a torn meniscus injury in his knee, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Sunday.

Langeliers last saw action in the Athletics’ series-opening 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn., on Friday, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout. Jonah Heim took over the catching duties in the second game of the series Saturday, with Langeliers missing what is expected to be the first of many games due to his lower-body injury.

This development involving the 28-year-old Langeliers affects not only the Athletics’ play on the field but also the front office’s plans, as he was viewed as one of the team’s top trade chips. Now, any trade ideas involving Langeliers will have to be put on hold, as the Athletics’ injury woes worsen.

Passan noted that Langeliers is still deciding whether to have surgery to address his injury, an option that will sideline him for the rest of the season.

Acquired by the A’s via a trade with the Atlanta Braves in 2019, Langeliers has emerged as one of the top catchers in the big leagues today. He made his first MLB All-Star Game this season. Before suffering the injury, he was batting .263/.332/.497 with 23 home runs and 51 RBI to go along with a 122 OPS+ through 93 games in the 2026 campaign.
