Brent Rooker was forced to watch as the Athletics secured a second-straight win on Thursday, taking down Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees 1-0 to clinch the mini-series, 2-1. Now, the Athletics will turn their attention to Friday’s matchup, remaining in New York City to face Bo Bichette and the New York Mets.
Rooker has become one of the Athletics’ top players since joining the team in 2023, after spending his first three seasons with the Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals. Through 12 games in 2026, the right fielder has tallied six hits, eight RBIs, four runs and two home runs in 41 at-bats, but is batting just .146, which would mark his worst average since joining the Athletics.
But in Thursday's win over the Yankees, Rooker was forced to leave the game early after showing discomfort during his first at-bat in the first inning. He felt a sharp pain after swinging at an 84 mph changeup from pitcher Ryan Weathers and was later diagnosed with a right oblique injury.
On Friday, the A's placed right fielder Brent Rooker on the 10-day injured list due to the right oblique strain he suffered the previous night. As a result, Rooker was held out of the lineup for the start of the series against the Mets. In response, the team recalled second baseman/outfielder Zack Gelof from their Triple-A affiliate, the Las Vegas Aviators. Through 11 games with the Aviators this season, Gelof has been swinging a hot bat, posting a strong .366/.519/.732 slash line with four home runs.
"A’s have officially placed Brent Rooker on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain," MLB.com's Martin Gallegos wrote on X. "Zack Gelof, who is already here, is now active."
