Athletics’ Luis Severino gets potentially season-ending injury update

The athletics/athletics-news-mark-kotsay-hints-at-major-changes-after-yankees-loss">Athletics have not seen Luis Severino on the mound since late May. He pitched one inning against the New York Yankees on May 29 before being yanked from the game. Severino was diagnosed with a shoulder injury, and the A’s have been waiting to see when he will return.

Unfortunately, the latest news is not good. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay provided an update on the veteran starter’s progress. He mentioned that it is a distinct possibility that Severino is done for the 2026 season.

“Mark Kotsay said he doesn’t expect Luis Severino back on the mound this season for the A’s. Just not enough time left in the season based on where he’s at in his throwing program,” MLB.com beat reporter Martin Gallegos said on Sunday night.

Severino is in the midst of his second season with the Athletics. He had an okay season in 2025, pitching to a 4.54 ERA in 29 starts. This year, he got off to a brutal start, earning the loss in six of his 12 outings before heading to the injured list.

This is also an important year for the veteran pitcher. He is the second year of a three-year contract with the Athletics. He has a $22 million player option for the 2027 campaign. It’s likely he picks it up, but he will be an unrestricted free agent in 2028.

The Athletics have not had the season they envisioned. Losing Severino is certainly a blow they did not need at this time. It will certainly be interesting to see how they approach the rotation for the remainder of the 2026 MLB season.
