The Milwaukee Brewers have been bitten by the injury bug over and over agains this season and it struck yet again on Tuesday night.

The Brewers already didn't look exactly the same when they took the field against the San Diego Padres. Brice Turang, who arguably is the best overall second baseman in baseball, got the start at shortstop for just the 11th time in his career and for the first time since 2023. That's because young shortstop Cooper Pratt is currently on the Injured List himself.

Turang went 1-for-5 in the Brewers' 11-2 loss against San Diego, but that wasn't the most important thing. In the contest, Turang suffered a sprained thumb, as shared on X by MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

"William Contreras will be sore from being struck on the arm, but that’s not the Brewers’ chief concern tonight. Brice Turang has a sprained thumb. 'Might not be the best time,' Pat Murphy said," McCalvy wrote.

Bad News For Milwaukee

If Turang needs to miss time, that will be the worst-case scenario for the Brewers. Again, they're already missing Pratt. Turang has been the club's most consistent offensive weapon all season to this point. He's actually leading the club with 5.2 wins above replacement right now. In comparison, Jacob Misiorowski is second on the team with 4.7. That's how good Turang is.

Right now, the Brewers are already thin in the infield to the point that Jihwan Bae, who just joined the team recently is getting starts. He has played in just 165 total big league games in his career, including 13 last year with the Pittsburgh Pirates and 29 the year before.

If Turang misses time, expect to see more of Bae. Plus, a lot of David Hamilton and Joey Ortiz. If the Brewers need to add more firepower from the minors, someone like Luke Adams or even Andrew Fischer could help at third base, which could push Oritz back to shortstop.

All in all, this is the type of news that Milwaukee just doesn't need right now. The Brewers look great in the standings. Milwaukee is 74-46 on the season and in first place in the National League Central. But the Chicago Cubs are just four games back and are closing in quickly. The best-case scenario here would be Turang being alright and not missing time, of course. The worst-case scenario would be a long absence during the playoff push.
