Baltimore Orioles Starter Endures Another Crushing Outing

It just keeps getting worse for the Baltimore Orioles. Just one season removed from their second consecutive playoff appearance, the spiral downward never seems to end.

Tuesday was meant to be a joyous occasion. It was the season debut of Kyle Gibson, returning to the Orioles after one year away, and hoping to get back to the form he showed in 2023 when he led the American League with 33 starts.

It did not go to plan. Just three batters in, the New York Yankees had a 3-0 lead on the strength of back-to-back-to-back home runs. It marked the second time this year the Yankees have accomplished the feat, and only the first time ever a team has opened a game with three straight home runs twice in one season.

It would not be the end of Gibson's night, however, as the veteran would stick around for a few more innings. After 3.2 innings, he would be done. Gibson allowed nine runs, all earned, on 11 hits and two walks, five home runs and only struck out two.

It marks but another bump in the road for the Orioles this year. After failing to make any notable additions to the rotation in the offseason, that very same unit has failed the team at every turn.

Baltimore's rotation now holds a 6.05 ERA. Only the Miami Marlins (6.50) and Colorado Rockies (6.73) rank lower, but there is a catch. The Orioles were expected to be a playoff contender again this year, those other two teams were expected to battle it out for the highest draft lottery chances.

Since the start of the campaign, Baltimore has seen its chances of making the postseason crater. Once holding a respectable 55% chance to play in October, it has dropped off the ledge.

The failures of the front office to do anything substantial have put the team in a bind. With what once seemed to be a promising young core, the Orioles are now wasting that youth as they struggle through the doldrums of mediocrity yet again.
