The Toronto Blue Jays had a feel-good performance against the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. After a 3-0 shutout victory in the series opener, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 7-0 lead over San Diego in the second game of this three-game series.
Toronto's 7-0 strike was aided by a five-run seventh inning. While it was an encouraging offensive eruption for a Blue Jays team that has been near the bottom of MLB offensively for most of the season, it was marred by the unexpected removal of switch-hitting outfielder Anthony Santander.
Unexpectedly replaced by Jonatan Clase, who ended up hitting a two-run double, Santander's night ended after three at-bats.
Santander has been dealing with some injury issues this season, most notably his left shoulder that has caused some repeated problems throughout the year. Shortly after his removal, the Blue Jays announced an update on Santander, and it was a different injury this time that caused his early exit.
"UPDATE: DH Anthony Santander was removed from tonight’s game with left hip inflammation," the team announced.

While any injury news regarding Santander would be unfortunate for a Blue Jays team that paid him $92.5 million this offseason, a brand new issue for the 2024 All-Star is especially concerning. While it has not been a great start to his Blue Jays tenure, Santander homered in the series opener while picking up another hit on Wednesday, showing some potential signs of life offensively.
If this hip injury causes an IL stint for Santander, the Blue Jays will have to look internally at other outfield options.
