The Toronto Blue Jays pitching staff has been shorthanded nearly the entire season. Trey Yesavage, still officially in his rookie season, has had his first full year in the big leagues interrupted by two separate injuries.

The 23-year-old opened the season on the 15-day injured list due to a right shoulder impingement and made his season debut in late April.

His second major setback came during his most recent start nearly one month ago on August 4 against the Houston Astros, when he felt his left knee buckle while tossing warmup pitches.

He went back on the injured list and underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus. When on the mound this year, Yesavage has struggled with command at times yet still has been a reliable arm, owning a 3.65 ERA across 18 starts.

After the surgery it took Yesavage just seven days to throw again off flat ground, and since then he has continued to build up his throwing progression.

While speaking with reporters ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Cleveland Guardians, manager John Schneider outlined the plan for Yesavage for the remainder of the season.

He will throw off a mound on Friday and then one more time after that before heading to Dunedin to face hitters at Toronto’s spring training complex.

After that he will pitch in a rehab or simulated game before returning to the Blue Jays in a bulk relief role, building his workload back up with the team per Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.

With Schneider’s plan in place, that indicates Yesavage could be available out of the bullpen to pitch multiple innings given he does not have enough time to fully build back up as a starter.

Even in a limited role, Yesavage has already shown he has what it takes to rise to the occasion. With the Blue Jays still in position to earn the final American League wild card spot, his efforts down the stretch will be greatly appreciated.
