Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer has had a Hall of Fame-worthy career thus far in Major League Baseball. The St. Louis, Missouri, native is in his 18th season in the majors with a career record of 221-117. In 483 regular-season games played, he has totaled 3,489 strikeouts and 779 walks with a 3.22 ERA.
These incredible statistics have led to eight All-Star selections, three Cy Young Awards and two World Series titles.
Before the 2025 season, Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the Blue Jays after spending last season with the Texas Rangers.
He battled through injuries this year, missing nearly three months of the season due to a right thumb injury. In his 17 starts in the regular season, the 41-year-old went 5-5 with a 5.19 ERA. He struck out 82 batters with 23 walks in 85 innings.
Scherzer was left off the Blue Jays' ALDS roster but returned in the ALCS against the Seattle Mariners. He made one start against the Mariners, allowing two earned runs with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He also started Game 3 of the World Series in Toronto's 18-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, in which he tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs.
On Friday, ahead of Game 6, with the Blue Jays looking to close out their first World Series title since 1993, Toronto manager John Schneider made an announcement about when Scherzer's next appearance will be.
"Max Scherzer will be held back to start a potential Game 7 #BlueJays," wrote The Athletic reporter Mitch Bannon.
Trey Yesavage and Shane Bieber will be in the dugout “to start” tonight, Schneider said. Could join bullpen if needed later on.

With Kevin Gausman getting the start in Game 6 for the Blue Jays against Yoshinobu Yamamoto for the Dodgers, Scherzer will not come out of the bullpen, as Schneider wants to save him to start Game 7, if necessary.
First pitch of Game 6 on Friday will be at 8 p.m. ET at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Fox with the Blue Jays up 3-2. If the Dodgers win, Scherzer's start in Game 7 will take place at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, also on Fox.
