Blue Jays Announce Vladimir Guerrero Jr. News After Absence From Lineup

The Toronto Blue Jays' season hung in the balance after superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s early exit in their 6-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday. The 26-year-old got hit in the forearm by a pitch in the third inning and got subbed out in the fourth.

Guerrero, who's slashing .281/.387/.449 with 11 homers and 40 RBI over 79 games this year, leads Toronto in OBP and is tied for the lead in homers. The veteran also leads with 46 walks and is second in hits and RBI. 

Blue Jays manager John Schneider relayed the team's update about Guerrero's condition before their bout with the Boston Red Sox on Friday (via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson).

“Vladdy’s sore, but he’s all right," he said.

He added that Guerrero didn't need further tests and will manage the pain day-to-day.

While Guerrero was initially absent from Toronto's starting lineup against Boston on Friday, that has since changed. He is back in his familiar spot, hitting third and playing first base.

"After hitting in the cage, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (forearm), who wasn't originally in the starting lineup, is now back hitting 3rd," MLB reported Hazel Mae posted on X.

The four-time All-Star signed a 14-year, $500 million extension with Toronto in April, forgoing free agency after this season. He owns a career slash line of .287/.365/.449 with 171 homers and 547 RBI across 898 games.

Right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios (3-3, 3.51 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays against Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (3-2, 3.31 ERA) on Friday night. After this series, Toronto will return home to host the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels before hitting the road to play the Chicago White Sox and Athletics.

The Blue Jays are 2.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for second place in the AL East and three games behind the Yankees for first.
