Blue Jays closer Julian Merryweather on 10-day IL with oblique strain

The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the New York Yankees 7-3 on Tuesday evening, but that victory came at a cost.

As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Toronto has placed closer Julian Merryweather on the 10-day injured list with a strained left oblique. Merryweather entered Tuesday's contest in the top of the eighth inning with two runners on and two outs and tossed only two pitches to New York center fielder Aaron Hicks before Gary Sanchez was caught in a rundown and tagged out. Merryweather, 29, did not take the bump for the ninth inning and was replaced by Tim Mayza, who finished the win for the hosts.

Merryweather has two saves at this early stage of the campaign and hasn't yet surrendered an earned run. He's tallied seven strikeouts and allowed only one hit and one walk across his first 4⅓ innings.

In a corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays recalled right-hander Anthony Castro and made him available for the Wednesday afternoon game against the Yankees. As noted by the RotoWire Staff, Castro made a push for a bullpen spot but fell short during spring training.
