The Toronto Blue Jays (25-25) were riding high after sweeping the San Diego Padres (28-21), but they fell back to .500 after losing 3-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays (24-26) on Friday night. Toronto is now a half-game behind the Boston Red Sox (27-26) for second place in the AL East heading into Saturday night's slate.
Additionally, the Blue Jays are just one game ahead of the Rays. The latter club won two out of three games in Toronto from May 13-15, and leads the season series 3-1.
Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, they now have a new injury to deal with, via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.
"News: Yimi García to the IL with a right shoulder impingement. Paxton Schultz up," he reported on Saturday.
Garcia (0-2, 3.15 ERA) has six holds and three saves out of six opportunities across 21 appearances this season. The 34-year-old pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2014-19, the Miami Marlins from 2020 to the first half of 2021, the Houston Astros for the second half, the Blue Jays from 2022 to the first half of 2024, and the Seattle Mariners for the second half.
