Blue Jays’ Disappointing $106.5 Million Star Predicted for Incredible Achievement

Offensively, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Andrés Giménez has easily been among the league's more disappointing players thus far.

Good thing the Blue Jays cared far more about Giménez's defense when they added him and his seven-year, $106.5 million contract last winter.

MLB Advanced Media writers Andrew Simon and Shanthi Sepe-Chepuru announced their midseason Gold Glove predictions on Tuesday, and few should have been shocked to see Giménez as the projected AL second base winner.

Giménez, who turns 27 in September, has won three straight Gold Gloves. All of those came with the Cleveland Guardians, where he averaged 5.5 bWAR and a .724 OPS during that stretch.

According to MLBAM, Giménez leads all second basemen with 57 OAA dating back to 2020.

Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg holds the MLB record for consecutive Gold Glove wins at second base, winning nine straight from 1983-1991.

Giménez isn't the only Blue Jays player projected to take home some hardware. Simon and Sepe-Chepuru also predicted that catcher Alejandro Kirk and utilityman Ernie Clement would win Gold Gloves.

Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, Giménez is still trying to find his offensive footing. He's mired in an ugly 2-for-27 slump, dropping his average to .192 and his OPS to .574.

The Blue Jays nonetheless remain in the thick of the postseason race, entering Tuesday only 3 1/2 games out of first place in the AL East. Toronto would be the AL's No. 5 seed and second Wild Card team if the season ended today.
