Blue Jays Facing Pivotal Roster Decision

The Toronto Blue Jays face an important bullpen decision after veteran right-hander Matt Bowman opted out of his minor league contract Friday.

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Toronto now has until Saturday to either add Bowman to its active roster or release him, allowing him to become a free agent.

The opt-out gives the Blue Jays little time to decide whether the 35-year-old reliever fits into their plans as they continue navigating the second half of the season.

Veteran bullpen depth often becomes increasingly valuable approaching the trade deadline, making Bowman's situation one to watch.

Bowman is a veteran of more than 230 major league appearances after debuting with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016.

Originally selected by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of Princeton University, he has also spent time with the Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Minnesota Twins, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros organization and Blue Jays organization.

Bowman appeared in 23 games for Triple-A Buffalo this season, posting a 1-2 record with a 4.20 ERA over 30 innings.

He also struck out 34 hitters while recording a 1.23 WHIP after joining the Blue Jays organization. Earlier this year, he impressed with a 1.69 ERA for the Minnesota Twins' Triple-A affiliate before exercising an opt-out clause that led him to Toronto.

Toronto entered Friday with a 41-46 record, sitting third in the American League East as the club continues searching for consistency.

Bullpen depth remains an area of focus as the trade deadline approaches and roster flexibility becomes increasingly important.

Whether the Blue Jays choose to promote Bowman or allow him to test free agency, the organization must make its decision before Saturday's deadline.

The outcome will determine whether the experienced reliever remains part of Toronto's pitching depth or becomes available to another club.
