Toronto Blue Jays three-time All-Star outfielder George Springer missed almost the entire first month of the season due to a strained left oblique muscle and, later, a right quadriceps strain, but debuted April 28 as a designated hitter.
After only four games, however, Springer aggravated his quadriceps and returned to the injured list retroactive to Monday. Ahead of Thursday's matchup at the Oakland Athletics, Toronto general manager Ross Atkins told reporters the 2017 World Series Most Valuable Player likely won't return May 13.
"I would expect it would take more than just the IL stint," Atkins said of Springer's status, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "There's a chance I'm wrong, but based on the information that I have right now, I would expect that it would take longer than that IL stint."
Springer hit two home runs in Saturday's victory over the Atlanta Braves but endured what Atkins called a "setback" over the weekend. Atkins added the 31-year-old who signed a six-year, $150 million deal to join the Blue Jays in January is "obviously very frustrated" by his injury woes.
