Blue Jays INF/OF Whit Merrifield gets vaccinated, will play in upcoming homestand

Earlier this week, the Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder/outfielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitcher Max Castillo and minor leaguer Samad Taylor.

While the Blue Jays were adding a two-time All-Star, there was a cloud of uncertainty surrounding Merrifield's availability to the team due to his vaccination status. Canada requires vaccination to enter the country, forcing Merrifield to choose between getting vaccinated or missing games played in Toronto.

When the Royals visited the Blue Jays in July, Merrifield was one of ten Kansas City players not to make the trip up north. The 32-year-old hadn't received the vaccine at the time because he "didn't think the risk was worth it."

Now, just a few weeks later, Merrifield has had a change of heart.

On Thursday, Merrifield told reporters he had been vaccinated and will be with the team in Toronto for their next homestand beginning Aug. 12 against the Cleveland Guardians.

"It's something that I could have handled a little better," Merrifield said, "but what's happened has happened. I'm excited to be a Blue Jay, and I'm excited to get to Toronto and play at Rogers Centre."

Merrifield made his Blue Jays debut Thursday night against the Minnesota Twins. He finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Through 96 games this season, Merrifield is batting .242/.292/.353, with six home runs and 43 RBI.
