Blue Jays’ John Schneider Announces Disappointing Anthony Santander News

The Toronto Blue Jays have come out firing since the All-Star break, capping a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with an 8-6 win on Sunday. It marked their third straight victory and extended their home winning streak to 10 games, tying a franchise record at Rogers Centre. They now turn their attention to a home series against the New York Yankees, looking to build on their early lead in the AL East.

Toronto has done this without the help of outfielder Anthony Santander, who’s been sidelined since late May. Santander injured his shoulder after crashing into the outfield wall during a road game in Anaheim, landing him on the injured list with inflammation in his left shoulder. His lengthened absence has been somewhat worrisome, especially given the expectations that came with his arrival this offseason.

On Monday, manager John Schneider gave a not-so-thrilling update on Santander’s status. Per MLB.com’s Keegan Matheson, the outfielder is still a couple of weeks away from resuming hitting and will be evaluated each week.

Schneider added, “For a week-to-week issue, there aren’t a ton of weeks left,” indicating the Blue Jays may be running out of time to get him fully healthy this season.

Santander has struggled in his first year with Toronto, posting a .179/.273/.304 slash line with six home runs and 18 RBIs over 50 games. His .577 OPS ranks as the lowest of his career, falling well short of the production the team envisioned when they signed him to a five-year, $92.5 million deal.

Still, the Blue Jays have managed to stay atop the AL East in his absence, powered by strong bullpen work and timely hitting—like Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s 420-foot home run on Sunday. As Santander continues his recovery, Toronto will hope to keep its momentum going and remain in control of the division race.
