Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer has made just one start this season. Agreeing to a one-year, $15 million contract with Toronto in the offseason, Scherzer began his 18th MLB campaign with the hopes of staying healthy.
Injuries have plagued the three-time Cy Young Award winner in recent seasons, as Scherzer made just nine starts in 2024. Turning in a strong Spring Training, the 40-year-old right-hander surrendered just two earned runs in 13 innings pitched.
Unable to carry that momentum into the regular season, Scherzer was placed on the injured list with a right thumb injury after pitching just three innings in his Blue Jays debut.
More than two weeks have passed since Scherzer's first Blue Jays start, and the team has since made another unfortunate announcement via manager John Schneider.
"Max Scherzer (thumb) is still feeling soreness after throwing recently, John Schneider says," Keegan Matheson of MLB.com posted on X. "He’s going to visit with a doctor again in the coming days."

Despite being initially placed on the 15-day IL, this latest announcement indicates a return is not on the horizon for Scherzer. In 467 career games (458 starts), Scherzer owns a 3.16 ERA with 3,408 strikeouts in 2,881 innings pitched. His strikeout total ranks second among active pitchers.
An eight-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner, Scherzer has a spot in Cooperstown when his MLB career is over. For now, the veteran righty is trying to get healthy in hopes of contributing to a Blue Jays team that currently sits atop the American League East.
