Trent Palmer makes his return to game action:

Speaking of returns, Trent Palmer returned to game action on Friday afternoon. The 24-year-old right-handed pitcher had Tommy John surgery last August, but pitched with the FCL Blue Jays in a rehab assignment to kick off his 2023 season.

Results don’t really matter on rehab assignments, but Palmer finished with a line of 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Before the injury, Palmer had a 3.69 ERA and a 4.36 FIP in 31.2 innings pitched with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, along with a 24.3 K% and an 11 BB%. I wouldn’t be surprised if he finishes the season there.

Young guns in AAA update:

Addison Barger, Spencer Horwitz, and Orelvis Martinez have been playing well in Triple-A as of late, so let’s look at how they did in the double-header that was played Friday.

Starting with the youngest of the three, the 21-year-old Martinez, he went 1-5 with two walks, three strikeouts, and his third home run of the season. So far in Buffalo, he’s slashing .243/.333/.432 with those three homers in 87 plate appearances. Moreover, he has an 11.5 BB% and a 26.4 K%. He hasn’t been great, but the 21-year-old hasn’t looked outclassed at the highest minor league level.

The 25-year-old Horwitz deserves to be called up when the roster expand in September. On Friday, he went 2-6 with a walk and a strikeout, while also hitting his 26th double of the season. The first baseman is slashing .332/.449/.494 with nine homers in 421 plate appearances this season, along with a higher BB% (16.4%) than K% (15.7%). Call him up.

Barger started the season off rough before missing a few months with an elbow injury. On Friday, he went 3-7 with a strikeout and a double. For the season, he’s slashing .249/.362/.416 with seven homers in 246 plate appearances, along with a 14.2 BB% and a 23.2 K%. Since returning from the injured list, he’s slashing .256/.377/.466 with six homers in 159 plate appearances, and has a 15.7 BB% and an 18.9 K%.

Manuel Beltre’s season so far:

One thing that isn’t discussed enough is the signs that 19-year-old Manuel Beltre is showing in Single-A.

This season, he’s slashing .234/.344/.343 with an 11.5 BB% and a 19.2 K%. On Friday, he hit his fifth home run of the season, giving him a 95 wRC+.

The Blue Jays’ top international free agent signing of 2021 is one of the youngest players in Single-A, and he has held his own. What’s more interesting is his good walk rate, and the fact he’s found somewhat of a power stroke in his 5’10”, 155 lbs frame. He’s also a smooth defender at shortstop and will likely stick there as he climbs the minor league ladder.

Jace Bohrofen has been on fire:

Out of all the 2023 draftees, the 21-year-old outfielder has adapted the best.

Bohrofen started his professional career with the FCL Blue Jays, slashing .267/.450/.467 with a homer in 20 plate appearances with the rookie ball team.

He was called up to Single-A, where he’s already hit two home runs in two games. It’s a very small sample size of 30 plate appearances, but Bohrofen has been impressive so far.
