The Toronto Blue Jays are heading to the 2025 postseason.

With an 8-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday afternoon, the Blue Jays clinched at worst a wild card spot in October. The job isn’t done, though, as the Blue Jays need just four more wins to clinch the best record in the American League.

This is the fourth time in the Vladimir Guerrero Jr./Bo Bichette era that the Blue Jays have clinched. After missing the postseason in 2019, the Jays got into the 2020 postseason because of the expanded postseason due to the pandemic. There was heartbreak in 2021, as they missed out on the final day, but they returned to the postseason in 2022 and 2023.

Last season was a disaster for the Blue Jays, as everything that could go wrong did. In the end, the Jays finished with a 74-88 record, selling at the deadline and finishing with the eighth overall pick in the 2025 draft. It looked as if the Jays were going to have a similar season, as they were 16-20 after a walk-off loss in Los Angeles on May 7.

Their play started to improve in late May, and by the start of July, the Jays took over the top spot in the American League East. Down by eight games at one point, the New York Yankees rolled into Toronto and were swept in four games, with a George Springer grand slam on Canada Day solidifying the 2025 season as a special one for the Jays.

Unlike the previous season, the Blue Jays bought at the deadline, adding Shane Bieber, Louis Varland, Seranthony Domínguez, and Ty France. Bieber and Domínguez in particular have been great additions.

But the job isn’t done. With the Yankees winning on Sunday, the Blue Jays’ magic number to clinch the top spot in the American League East and the best record in the American League is four. After that, the Jays will hunt for their postseason victory since 2016.

They’ll return home to Toronto for the remaining six games, hosting the Boston Red Sox for a three-game series starting Tuesday, followed by a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays starting Friday.
