Things have taken a turn for Bo Bichette.
The Toronto Blue Jays’ All-Star shortstop has landed on the 10-day IL with a left knee sprain, retroactive to Sep. 7, ahead of Tuesday’s series opener versus the Houston Astros, per the club’s announcement.
Outfielder Joey Loperfido has been recalled from triple-A Buffalo in Bichette’s place. He’ll bat eighth and start in left field against the Astros, while Ernie Clement will slide over to short for a second straight contest.

With Bichette’s IL stint backdated, the earliest he can return is on Sep. 17 in Tampa Bay against the Rays. The 27-year-old has been a workhorse in 2025 after missing half of last season, playing in 139 out of a possible 143 games this season.
Bichette injured his left leg during a collision at home plate during Saturday’s 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees. But he remained in the contest following a rain delay that lasted nearly two hours, during which he underwent X-rays that returned negative.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed post-game that the two-time All-Star sustained lacerations to his left shin after sliding into Yankees catcher Austin Wells. He didn’t suit up for Sunday’s series finale in the Bronx.
Toronto will sorely miss Bichette’s presence in the lineup, considering he leads the majors in hits (181) while slashing .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 93 RBIs this season. He’s accounted for a 132 wRC+ (100 league average), the highest of his seven major league seasons outside his rookie campaign (143).
Bichette, a pending free agent, is on pace to become a four-win player per fWAR in ’25.
Loperfido returns to the Blue Jays following a brief stint at triple-A, where he hit .192/.276/.288 with three extra-base hits — including one home run — and occasionally played first base over 15 games with the Bisons.
The 26-year-old outfielder has played 30 games with Toronto this season, sporting an exceptional .358/.409/.506 slash line and 159 wRC+ while hitting three home runs and driving in 10.
