Blue Jays place Hyun Jin Ryu on 10-day IL with neck tightness

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu on the 10-day injured list with neck tightness, the team announced Sunday.

The move comes two days after Ryu said he felt good following a 7-3 loss to the Minnesota Twins. He pitched a little more than two innings in that game, giving up five earned runs and two home runs.

According to Sportsnet's Ben Wagner, Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins is "hopeful" Ryu misses just one start.

Ryu is in the midst of one of his worst seasons in Major League Baseball, posting a 4.34 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 159.2 innings despite a 13-9 record. The 34-year-old has struggled as of late, allowing 12 earned runs in his past two starts.

With Ryu sidelined, Toronto will rotate Robbie Ray, Jose Berrios, Alek Manoah, and Steven Matz.

Ryu's injury comes at an unfortunate time for the Blue Jays, who are fighting for an American League wild-card spot. The club is third in the AL East with an 83-65 record and just a half-game up on the New York Yankees for the second wild-card spot.
