Blue Jays place Jameson Taillon on IL

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed right-hander Jameson Taillon on the 15-day injured list with right forearm tendinitis, adding another starting pitcher to an already lengthy injury list. Toronto recalled right-handed reliever Chase Lee from Triple-A as the corresponding roster move ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

Taillon was acquired from the Chicago Cubs just over a week ago and made his second start for the Blue Jays on Monday. He exited after four innings against the Red Sox after experiencing forearm discomfort. Taillon allowed one hit, struck out three and walked three while throwing 61 pitches, including 34 for strikes. His velocity also declined during the fourth inning, with his four-seam fastball topping out at 90.1 mph.

The injury further complicates Toronto’s plans for its rotation. The Blue Jays had intended to use a six-man group featuring Taillon, Dylan Cease, Jose Soriano, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. Yesavage is now on the IL with a meniscus injury, leaving another opening after Taillon’s placement on the shelf.

The Blue Jays have already dealt with several major pitching injuries this season. Cody Ponce suffered a torn right ACL, Jose Berríos underwent Tommy John surgery, Shane Bieber missed the first 78 games with right elbow inflammation, Spencer Arrighetti has dealt with Morton’s neuroma, Patrick Corbin has a left teres major strain and Bowden Francis underwent Tommy John surgery.

Simeon Woods Richardson could become an option for the rotation after entering Monday’s game immediately following Taillon’s departure. He pitched three innings of relief. Woods Richardson owns a 6.23 ERA and matching 11.9% walk and strikeout rates this season, but he recorded a 4.11 ERA across 245 innings with the Minnesota Twins over 2024 and 2025.

Toronto also has Matt Waldron and Spencer Miles on the active roster, while John Klein, Chad Dallas, CJ Van Eyk and Lazaro Estrada are among other 40-man roster options.

The Blue Jays have Cease, Soriano, Scherzer and Bieber scheduled to start the next four games, meaning another starter is not needed until Saturday.
