The Toronto Blue Jays entered the 2025 campaign in a great deal of uncertainty.
With star infielders Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set to become free agents next offseason, the Blue Jays have a choice to trade them and begin a roster overhaul by collecting premium draft assets or continue to compete in the ever-competitive AL East.
That decision could come as soon as the trade deadline on July 31.
The Blue Jays attempted to come to an agreement with Guerrero this past offseason, but the All-Star first baseman revealed the two parties were never close.
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter expects the Blue Jays to ship both players out at the deadline for a package deal that commands a combination of established stars and top-100 prospects. Reuter writes that the deal could mimic past in-season trades involving Max Scherzer and Trea Turner.
"After failing to come to terms on a long-term deal with Guerrero during the offseason, the Blue Jays are at a crossroads," Reuter writes. "If they fall out of contention early, the free-agent-to-be will almost certainly hit the trade block this summer along with several other veterans. We've seen a huge packaged deal of Max Scherzer and Trea Turner moved in the past, and a deal that includes Vlad Jr. and Bichette could really shift the baseball landscape at the deadline."
Bichette, 27, is off to a 7-for-15 start to the season while Guerrero Jr., 26, is 4-for-15.
The Blue Jays split their opening series against the Baltimore Orioles, starting the year 2-2.
