The Toronto Blue Jays entered Thursday looking to close the gap between them and the Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild card spot.

The team is fortunate to even be in this position, having played incredible baseball during the month of August to keep their postseason hopes alive. No player on the offensive end was more impactful than catcher Alejandro Kirk.

While Kirk provides elite framing ability, routinely stealing strikes for his pitchers, he also has the ability to be a major contributor in the batter’s box and he showcased that throughout the month of August.

The 27-year-old two-time All-Star owned a .341 batting average, .412 on-base percentage, .946 OPS, five home runs and 20 RBIs in August. It was by far the best month Kirk has had this year.

Kirk missed nearly two months in the first half recovering from surgery on his left thumb and upon returning struggled to get back to his usual standards before turning things around dramatically.

Kirk’s efforts earned him a spot on MLB’s Team of the Month on Thursday, as he was selected over every catcher in the American League for the honor.

There was competition, with Seattle Mariners backstop Cal Raleigh also having an excellent month, but MLB ultimately gave the award to Kirk. The Blue Jays reacted to his accomplishment on social media during Thursday’s series finale with the Guardians.

“Congratulations to Captain Kirk on being named to MLB’s Team of the Month for August!” the club wrote on X.

Kirk will look to continue his momentum over the final four weeks of the regular season as he tries to lead Toronto back to the postseason.
