Blue Jays Receive Another Tough Update on Anthony Santander

Anthony Santander’s comeback with the Toronto Blue Jays has hit another setback with the regular season nearing its end.

Santander was scratched from the Buffalo Bisons’ lineup Tuesday because of lower back discomfort and remained out Wednesday. With only three games left on Buffalo’s schedule, the timing leaves very little opportunity for him to continue his rehab.

The veteran outfielder has not played in the majors this season after undergoing left shoulder surgery in February to repair a labral tear.

Santander began his rehab assignment with Buffalo on Sept. 9. He appeared in two games, going 1-for-7 with a single and a strikeout while splitting time between left field and designated hitter.

The latest issue comes after a long recovery process. Santander also dealt with a partial shoulder dislocation during his first season with Toronto in 2025, limiting him to 54 games and a .175 batting average.

Toronto entered Friday at 76-77 and 1.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final American League Wild Card spot. The Blue Jays have nine games remaining and are preparing for a three-game series against the Texas Rangers.

Santander would have provided another experienced power bat if he had been able to return. Instead, Toronto will have to continue its postseason push with the players currently on the roster.

The Blue Jays have stayed within striking distance despite Santander’s absence for the entire season. Now, with the minor league schedule almost finished, the window for a late comeback has become even smaller.

For Santander, the immediate priority is getting past the latest back issue and continuing his recovery. For Toronto, the focus shifts entirely to the final games of the regular season and its pursuit of a Wild Card spot.
