The Toronto Blue Jays signed future Hall of Fame pitcher Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract over the winter, but he's only pitched one game this season due to a thumb injury.

The eight-time All-Star allowed two runs off of two solo homers in three innings in a 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on March 29. However, he's still fearsome when he's healthy, as he notched a 3.20 ERA across eight starts for the Texas Rangers in their 2023 championship season and a 2.29 ERA in 23 starts for the New York Mets in 2022.

Scherzer is progressing in his rehab, via MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.

"Max Scherzer threw off the mound again today, a few more pitches than last time (which was 27)," he reported on Tuesday. "Still a 'baby steps' deal, but the steps of a baby go farther than no steps at all."

The 40-year-old is still on the 15-day IL.

Scherzer debuted for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2008 and spent two seasons with them before going to the Detroit Tigers in 2010. The right-hander then experienced six-and-a-half seasons with the Washington Nationals, including their championship campaign in 2019.

The Nationals then traded Scherzer to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2021 before he signed with the New York Mets that offseason. The latter club later traded the three-time Cy Young Award winner to the Rangers in July 2023.

The Blue Jays start a three-game set at home vs. the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
