Blue Jays Release Lenyn Sosa

The Blue Jays have released infielder Lenyn Sosa, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.

Sosa, who had been with Triple-A Buffalo since the Blue Jays outrighted him in mid-August, joined the organization in an April trade with the White Sox. Chicago quickly cut the cord on Sosa this year despite a career-best showing in 2025. Sosa entered last season with 15 home runs in 578 plate appearances, but he went on to club 22 in 544 trips to the plate. A paltry 3.3% walk rate limited Sosa to a league-average .264/.293/.434 line, though, and the offseason addition of Munetaka Murakami pushed him out of the first base picture. Sosa appeared in 42 games at first last year and 99 at second, but Chase Meidroth has taken over as Chicago’s starter at the keystone.

With the out-of-options Sosa having no clear path to a regular role in 2026, the White Sox dealt him for minor league outfielder Jordan Rich and cash considerations or a player to be named later. Sosa saw time at first, second and DH with the Blue Jays, but he hit just .188/.205/.275 over a 28-game, 84-plate appearance stretch before a right wrist contusion forced him to the 10-day injured list in late May. The Jays transferred Sosa to the 60-day IL on Aug. 2 and outrighted him two weeks later. Although Sosa has over three years of service time and could have elected free agency, he accepted the outright assignment.

Between Chicago and Toronto, Sosa combined to bat .195/.207/.283 (31 wRC+) with one home run in 117 PA this season. The 26-year-old drew walks at a microscopic 0.9% clip, lowering his career rate to 3% in 1,239 major league trips to the plate. Owner of a lifetime .241/.268/.283 line and a 78 wRC+ at the game’s highest level, Sosa will likely have to settle for a minor league deal in the coming months.
