Blue Jays roster roundup – Barger, Martinez, and Zulueta have been optioned to triple-A

Shortly after the Blue Jays’ 8-1 win over the New York Yankees, the organization announced a bevy of internal roster moves that have a direct impact on the competition surrounding the Jays’ last bench spot.

Infielders Addison Barger and Orelvis Martinez as well as right-handed pitcher Yosver Zulueta were optioned to triple-A following today’s game while outfielder Steward Berroa was also reassigned to the Jays Minor League camp.

Both Barger and Martinez were one of the numerous infielders looking to break through and secure a roster spot on a crowded Blue Jays bench although both were likely destined to start the campaign in triple-A to continue getting regular reps on the diamond. They join fellow infielder Leo Jimenez, who was optioned to triple-A yesterday as well.

A trio of Blue Jays prospects optioned to triple-A

Barger had a strong showing at the plate this spring, going 5 for 14 (.357) with one double, four walks, and a stolen base while putting up a .929 OPS. The left-handed batter was limited on the field last year due to injury and will be looking to break through into the big leagues this campaign, his bat being the calling card. He will continue to get regular reps across the field as the Jays look to find a home for one of the most athletic prospects within the farm system.

Joining Barger is the Jays’ top position player prospect Orelvis Martinez, who was fighting for the open spot at third base this spring as well as a role on the Jays’ bench with his power bat. The right-handed batter mustered three hits through 16 at-bats this spring along with one double, as the slugger was unable to showcase his plus power at the plate this go around. A positive for Martinez was he brought the strikeouts down compared to previous spring outings, a trend that will hopefully continue into the new campaign with the Bisons as he looks to put himself into a position for a Major League debut later this year.

Right-hander Yosver Zulueta will also be heading down to Buffalo to start the 2024 season, as the Cuban product posted a 10.80 ERA through five relief outings. He allowed seven hits, six earned runs, and struggled with his command this spring, allowing four walks while striking out just two batters. A long shot to make the Opening Day roster, Zulueta will head back down to Buffalo and look to improve upon his 4.08 ERA he put last season with the Bisons.
