Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect Trey Yesavage tagged with first professional loss

It was the third inning where it unravelled for the Blue Jays’ prospect. Yesavage struck out Diomedes Hernandez to start the inning, but gave up a double to Max Burt, followed by an RBI single from Roc Riggio. George Lombard Jr. walked, followed by a strikeout of Spencer Jones to put two on with two outs.

Both runners took 90 feet, and Yesavage walked Rafael Flores on five pitches. The bases were cleared by Dylan Jasso, giving the Patriots a 4-0 lead and getting Yesavage out of the game. Brendan Jones lined out to end Yesavage’s line.

Overall, Yesavage threw 54 pitches, 31 of them for strikes. It was the command that let him down, as Yesavage generated 12 whiffs on 25 total swings, a great number on any other night. This was the first time in his professional career that Yesavage had ever given up four earned runs.

In his last start with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Yesavage pitched four innings with four walks and four strikeouts. That said, Yesavage had several three-plus walk games before his previous start, walking three or more in his first three High-A starts, as well as six in his first professional start on April 8.

Since he pitched in the second game of the doubleheader, it’s not quite known when he’ll pitch next. It’ll either be Tuesday or Wednesday. Hopefully, that start goes better for the right-handed pitcher.
