Blue Jays trade Otto López to the Giants for cash considerations

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a transaction.

As you may recall, the Blue Jays designated long-time prospect Otto López for assignment on Friday. Well, the Blue Jays traded the 25-year-old utility player to the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations.

Once a top 10 prospect in the organization, López struggled in Triple-A during the 2023 season, slashing just .258/.313/.343 with two home runs in 346 plate appearances, along with a 6.6 BB% and a 15.9 K%. This was a significant downgrade from his 2022 season in Buffalo, where he slashed .297/.378/.415 with three homers in 391 plate appearances.

Now, López battled injuries and even landed on the 60-day injured list despite not playing a game for the Jays in 2023. He did, however, play several games for the Jays in 2022, slashing .667/.700/.667 in 10 plate appearances, along with six singles and three RBIs.

Despite the rough 2023 season, there’s still hope for the Dominican-born utility player, as he returned to the Dominican Republic and slashed .310/.351/.483 with two home runs in 94 plate appearances with the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League (LIDOM).

The trade comes on the heels of a significant move for the Giants, as they signed designated hitter Jorge Soler in the wee hours of the morning according to Susan Slusser. Soler signed a three-year deal worth $42 million.

It seemed as if the Giants and the Blue Jays seemed like potential trading partners for major league players as well, as the Jays have a surplus of infielders, a need of the Giants, while San Francisco has a surplus of outfielders, especially with the signing of Soler.

Unfortunately, those rumours may have been stopped dead in their tracks, as López is ready for a major league opportunity, but was just blocked by tons of Blue Jays infielders.
