Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage had a big league debut to remember. The organization’s top prospect had a shaky first inning where he allowed his first and only run of the game before settling down, striking out nine on the day compared to two walks and three hits.
Yesavage broke a Jays franchise record by striking out nine in his debut and induced 19 whiffs on the evening, keeping Rays hitters off balance for a good portion of the evening.
On top of this successful outing, Yesavage flirted with an immaculate inning as well. For those not aware, an immaculate inning is where a pitcher throws nine strikes and strikes out the side, essentially using the minimum amount of pitches to strike out three batters. Roger Clemens, Steve Delabar, and Thomas Pannone have accomplished this feat in a Jays uniform, and Yesavage was very close to joining the trio.

This was in the bottom of the fourth inning, with Jose Lowe, Jake Magnum, and Nick Fortes up to bat for Tampa Bay.
Yesavage used his splitter, four-seamer, and slider to get Lowe to swing over the top of his breaking pitch in the dirt, which Tyler Heineman blocked to help get the out. Magnum was next in line, and Yesavage sat him down with a 93 MPH four-seamer on the bottom corner before coming back with two splitters that the Rays switch-hitter swung over top on, tallying the second out.
With six pitches thrown, the Blue Jays starter was three pitches away from the immaculate inning. Nick Fortes stepped up to the plate, and Yesvage sent a four-seamer right down the middle, which the right-handed bat laid off to go down 0-1. Yesavage decided to return with a four-seamer down and away, and while the baseball caught a good portion of the strike zone, umpire Laz Diaz called it a ball, and the feat was officially over.

Had the ABS been in play, the Jays likely protest this call to get Yesavage into an 0-2 count, but instead the right-hander countered with two splitters to get Fortes out, with the Rays catcher swinging and missing on both offerings. Instead of the immaculate inning, Yesavage had to settle for a ten-pitch fourth inning.
While accomplishing the immaculate inning would have been an impressive feat for a rookie big league debut, Yesavage couldn’t have asked for a better foray into the Major Leagues with his outing. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays’ bats didn’t wake up until late in the game, meaning Yesavage doesn’t earn the win even with the limited runs on the board from his part, but he will likely get more opportunities to start down the stretch after his debut.
