Bo Bichette Could Already Be on the Move Again

Bo Bichette’s start to his time with the New York Mets has not gone well, either individually or for the team.

A 31-39 record through their first 70 games, combined with Bichette’s numbers falling well below expectations, has already generated buzz about his future in New York less than six months after he became a Met.

There’s been some chatter about a move before the August 3 trade deadline, but even if that doesn’t happen, insider Bob Nightengale has recently reported that many around baseball are expecting Bichette to opt out of his deal with New York and hit the free agent market again next winter.

Nightengale said:

“Teams expect New York Mets third baseman Bo Bichette to opt out of the final two years of his Mets contract after the season, giving clubs like the Philadelphia Phillies a second shot at him. It could be a massive gamble for Bichette considering he’s still owed $79 million. He is earning $2 million this year after already being paid a $40 million signing bonus, and if he opts out, he will be paid an additional $5 million,”

The 28-year-old Bichette, of course, signed a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets in free agency this past winter, which includes a player opt-out after the 2026 season. He’s hitting .236 with a .644 OPS, eight home runs, and 40 RBI through 70 games played so far.

It’s been quite clear that the fit hasn’t been all that smooth for Bichette in New York, and perhaps he had that possibility in the back of his mind when ensuring he had a player opt-out after Year 1.

Teams may be hesitant or unwilling to take on his current contract at the deadline, but the idea of a blank slate and the opportunity to sign him to a new deal in free agency should generate plenty of interest around MLB. From, as Nightengale mentioned, the Philadelphia Phillies to even a reunion with the Toronto Blue Jays, it would be fascinating to see Bichette back on the open market.
