Bo Bichette's ridiculous contract demands could deter teams

Former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette is still on the market despite being one of the top free agents available. His contract demands may be why.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Bichette is looking for a contract worth approximately $300 million. As first baseman Pete Alonso (five years, $155 million), pitcher Dylan Cease (seven years, $210 million) and designated hitter/outfielder Kyle Schwarber (five years, $150 million) are the only players to sign a contract worth more than $100 million this offseason, Bichette may be in for a long wait.

There was a time when Bichette seemed likely to receive that type of deal. Although his defense at short likely meant a move to second or third, Bichette was one of the best hitting middle infielders between 2019 and 2023. He produced a .299/.340/.487 batting line in his 2,328 plate appearances, hitting 89 homers and 130 doubles.

Bo Bichette drawing plenty of interest but price tag may be a deterrent

His star faded drastically in 2024. Bichette had the worst season of his career, posting a woeful .225/.277/.322 batting line over 336 plate appearances, hitting four homers and 16 doubles as he battled injuries throughout the season. He had a rebound performance in 2025, posting a .311/.357/.483 batting line with 18 homers and 44 doubles in his 628 plate appearances.

Bichette has suitors for his services. The Phillies, Red Sox and Yankees, among others, have been linked to Bichette. He and the Blue Jays have mutual interest in a reunion, although Toronto may only be interested in a short term contract.

Bichette may ultimately receive that type of contract. Alonso and the likes of Cody Bellinger and Alex Bregman essentially received one-year pillow contracts, getting a chance to improve their market in search of a long-term deal. Bichette has suitors but they may be reluctant to match his desired contracts.
