Brandon Nimmo makes bold claim amid possible Mets resurgence

New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo delivered a walk-off single to secure a 6-5 win and series victory over the rival  Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night at Citi Field.

With the Mets 7-3 in their last 10 games, Nimmo suggested the best is still to come for New York, which has been one of the most disappointing teams in MLB this summer.

"This team knows what it’s capable of," Nimmo said about the 2025 Mets, SNY's Ben Krimmel shared. "We’ve got a lot of veteran guys on here that know. For me, personally, this is the most talented team I've ever played on…It's just going out there and executing it every night."

That's a bold statement, considering all that has gone wrong for the Mets since June. New York fell to 64-58 on Aug. 15, while the first-place Phillies built what many viewed as an insurmountable lead in the National League East standings. As recently as a week ago, it seemed to be a matter of when and not if the Mets would lose possession of a wild-card playoff berth.

However, New York has improved to 71-61 and is now five games behind the 76-56 Phillies as of Wednesday.

"Let’s take it one game at a time," Nimmo said about the Mets' chase of the Phillies in the standings. "[Wednesday night] we have another game against a team that is in front of us. If we can win that game and just control what we can control, then we like our chances."

According to ESPN's Jorge Castillo, the Mets lead all of MLB with 98 runs scored since Aug. 12. Perhaps most importantly, New York showed fight by erasing deficits in back-to-back wins over the Phillies. On Tuesday, the Mets' offense bounced back after reliever Ryan Helsley surrendered a game-tying home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

"I’ve always said, 'Hottest team wins in playoffs,'" Nimmo added. "It doesn’t matter who's the best team; it’s the hottest team. This would be a good time to keep things going, and we’re very happy with the way the offense is playing right now."

The Mets look to remain hot in the series finale against the Phillies on Wednesday night.
