Braves claim intriguing arm off the waiver wire

If there’s one positive about being near the bottom of the league standings, it is that the Braves get their pick of the litter when it comes to players that have been placed on waivers. Most notably, they acquired Ha-Seong-Kim from the Rays last week, and over the weekend, they brought in another intriguing piece that could make an impact next season and beyond, claiming Alexis Diaz from the Dodgers.

In 2023, Diaz was an All-Star for the Cincinnati Reds, recording a 3.07 ERA and 11.5 K/9 over 71 appearances. He followed that up with a 3.99 ERA in 2024, but 2025 hasn’t been so kind.

Diaz began the season with the Reds and was designated for assignment after posting a 12.00 ERA in his first nine appearances. The Dodgers claimed him, and while he was somewhat better for Los Angeles, recording a 5.00 ERA, it wasn’t enough for the Dodgers to keep him on their roster for the postseason stretch.

For the Braves, this move comes with zero risk. They can take a flier on Diaz in hopes he shows something over the final three weeks of the season. He comes with two arbitration years remaining on his contract, but if he continues to struggle, Atlanta can cut ties with no financial commitment.

This morning, the Braves added Alexis Diaz to the active roster. They also recalled Connor Seabold. In corresponding moves, the club has optioned Rolddy Munoz back to Gwinnett and designated John Brebbia for assignment.
