Braves End 0–7 Start With Dominant Home Opener Win, Begin Climb Back in 2025 Season

The Atlanta Braves snapped their season-opening losing streak in emphatic fashion, defeating the Miami Marlins 10–0 in their home opener. It marked the team’s first win of the 2025 season after an 0–7 start—their longest season-opening skid in decades.

While a start like that raises questions, history provides some perspective. A season-opening losing streak of seven games is rare for postseason teams, but losing streaks of that length during a season are far from disqualifying. 85 teams in MLB history have lost at least seven in a row during the season and still made the playoffs, including three such teams in 2024 and four in 2023. Among them were the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks, who both endured lengthy losing streaks before meeting in the World Series.

The Braves matched their total number of hits with runners in scoring position from their first seven games—six—during Friday night’s 10-0 rout of the Marlins. For an offense that had been struggling to capitalize, it was a long-awaited breakthrough.

Atlanta’s early-season slump came against a gauntlet of elite competition. The Braves opened on the road against the Padres, who knocked them out of the 2024 postseason, before facing the reigning World Series champion Dodgers in Los Angeles.

Now back at Truist Park and finally in the win column, the Braves kick off a pivotal stretch: eight straight three-game series throughout April, giving them 24 chances to reset their season and build some steady momentum.

Spencer Schwellenbach led the charge Friday with the best start of his young career. The right-hander tossed eight scoreless innings, giving up just two singles while striking out 10 and walking none. He’s now thrown 14 consecutive scoreless frames to start the season.

Aaron Bummer handled the ninth to preserve the shutout. Meanwhile, the offense exploded for a season-high 16 hits, with six Braves recording multi-hit games. Michael Harris II led the way with three hits, and Austin Riley, Ozzie Albies and Bryan De La Cruz each chipped in two.

The win snapped Atlanta’s seven-game losing skid, avoiding the franchise’s worst start since 1988, when the team opened 0-10. Until Friday, the Braves were the final team in Major League Baseball still searching for a victory.

Despite the rocky beginning, there’s no shortage of talent on this roster. If the pitching staff can find stability, the pieces are in place for a climb back into contention. The season is long, and Atlanta has both the time and the track record to turn things around.
