Braves Make Roster Move After Win Against Mets

The Atlanta Braves made a roster move after Wednesday's split doubleheader against the New York Mets, optioning right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver to Triple-A Gwinnett. Smith-Shawver had been recalled as the club's designated 27th man for the twin bill and was returned to the minors following the games.

The move follows Smith-Shawver's first major league appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2025. The 23-year-old started Game 1 at Citi Field, allowing three runs over 41/3 innings while striking out four before Atlanta sent him back to continue building his workload.

The Braves improved to 63-45 after splitting the doubleheader, maintaining a 6.5-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East as they continue their road trip.

Atlanta's decision reflects the standard roster rules surrounding doubleheaders, which allow clubs to carry an extra player for the day before returning to the regular 26-man roster afterward. Because Smith-Shawver was the designated 27th man, no additional roster move was required.

The right-hander's return nevertheless provided an encouraging milestone after missing more than a year recovering from elbow surgery. His outing gave Atlanta another healthy starting option as the club manages its pitching depth ahead of the trade deadline.

With the Monday trade deadline approaching, the Braves remain well positioned atop the division while evaluating whether to pursue additional rotation help. Smith-Shawver's successful return gives the organization another internal option if needed later this season.

For now, he'll continue starting at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he'll work to increase his pitch count and stamina while remaining available if Atlanta needs another arm during the stretch run.
