The Cleveland Guardians called up Khalil Watson on June 18, and shortly after, his impact has directly contributed to winning. The 23-year-old was having an impressive season in Columbus before getting called up. Early in his major league career, Watson has shown speed and power both at the plate and on the bases. With the plethora of injuries Cleveland has at the moment, he will have to continue his hot streak at the plate. Watson is an exciting player with a high ceiling and looks to keep the Guardians atop the American League Central.
Watson was traded to Cleveland on August 1, 2023, when the Miami Marlins acquired Josh Bell. The former first-round pick came up as an infielder, but later transitioned to an outfield role in the Guardians’ farm system. In both the 2023-2024 seasons, Watson showed his raw power and athleticism. This made him rise through the ranks from High A, eventually to AA.
In 2025, Watson landed on the 40-man roster and split the season between Double- and Triple-A. Hitting around .250 that season with solid production, he became one of Cleveland’s best outfield prospects, only behind Chase DeLauter. Watson had a solid spring training in 2026, but ultimately began the season in AAA, where he hit .255 with a .861 OPS.
In mid-June, the Guardians faced key injuries and called Watson up to make his major league debut against the Brewers. In a small sample size so far (35 at-bats), he has hit .286 with one home run and eight runs batted in. An impressive start to his MLB career, Watson will look to continue through the July stretch of the season.
Cleveland’s outfield has had a youth movement throughout the 2026 season. The Guardians have gotten great performances from Delauter and Angel Martinez, but could use one more impact bat to join them. Watson has played like a franchise right fielder to start his career, but he has a long way to go to cement that spot.
As a corner outfielder, you have to showcase pop with the bat. Watson has hit 68 career home runs in the minor leagues, with one in the few weeks he’s been called up. The other trait is his defensive ability, which has been fine at the major league level and good enough to keep him in right field. The last thing that gets people excited about Watson is his speed in the outfield and on the bases. He has 92 career stolen bases in his minor league career, with two at the MLB level.
Watson’s not the biggest outfielder in the world, but his teammate Steven Kwan has proven you don’t have to be big to make an impact out there. Whether he finishes the year out with Cleveland or gets sent down, Watson looks to be an impact outfielder for the organization for years to come.
Watson has the potential to be an impact player for the Guardians, given his athletic ability, left-handed power, and ability to generate offense in multiple ways. Although some areas need improvement in consistency and discipline at the plate, his ceiling is high. If Watson keeps developing, he could be an exciting infielder to watch play in Cleveland in the coming years.
