The Milwaukee Brewers currently own the best record in the league entering Saturday (94–60), and with a postseason berth already clinched, the focus remains on getting fully healthy ahead of a potential divisional series.
The Brewers feature one of the most well-rounded groups in baseball, and the front office has continued to make all the right decisions—culminating in one of the most impressive teams Milwaukee has ever fielded.
Among those moves was acquiring starting catcher William Contreras from the Atlanta Braves ahead of the 2023 season. Since then, Contreras has emerged as a cornerstone for the club’s future. The 27-year-old earned his first All-Star selection with Milwaukee in 2024 and hasn’t slowed down this year, posting a .265 batting average, .358 on-base percentage, .767 OPS, 17 home runs, and 76 RBIs over 147 games, primarily hitting third in the lineup.
During Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Contreras was having a productive game at the plate, reaching base twice with a double and a walk. Contreras’s momentum was halted when he was struck in the left wrist on a half swing in the bottom of the seventh inning, resulting in catcher’s interference and allowing Ivan Herrera of the Cardinals to reach.
Unfortunately, the injury forced Contreras out of the game in the eighth inning, with his backup Danny Jansen replacing him. Contreras attempted to play through the pain but caught just two pitches before exiting.
Milwaukee held on to secure a 3-2 victory over St. Louis, and the team announced some good news postgame via manager Pat Murphy. Despite the initial concern, Contreras had X-rays come back negative (per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com).
William Contreras’ x-ray was negative, which is a huge positive for the Brewers. He was already in Pat Murphy’s office asking to play tomorrow.

Contreras is already dealing with a fractured finger that requires season-ending surgery, but he has elected to play through it with so much on the line and Milwaukee eyeing a deep playoff run. He also missed time earlier this month with a bruised forearm after being hit by a pitch. His status will be monitored as more updates surface.
If Contreras is forced to miss any time, Jansen would likely be the team’s primary catcher. Jansen was acquired at the trade deadline from the Tampa Bay Rays and, in limited playing time for Milwaukee, has struggled to produce. This is unfortunate for Milwaukee because Jansen was acquired for his offensive abilities. Over 60 games for the Brewers, the 30-year-old has batted .231 with a .663 OPS and just one home run.
