Brewers Designate Bryse Wilson, Select Lyon Richardson

The Brewers announced that right-hander Bryse Wilson has been designated for assignment.  Right-hander Lyon Richardson‘s contract has been selected from Triple-A Nashville to replace Wilson on both the 26-man and 40-man rosters.

This is the third time in less than two months that Wilson has been DFA’ed.  The Phillies designated the veteran in June only for the Cubs to claim Wilson on waivers, though Chicago themselves designated him on the fourth of July.  Wilson cleared waivers and then selected free agency over an outright assignment to the Cubs’ Triple-A squad, and the Brewers inked the righty to a contract a little over a month ago.

Wilson has a 4.24 ERA over 23 1/3 combined MLB innings for the three teams in 2026, and a 2.63 ERA, 17.9% strikeout rate, and zero walks over 13 2/3 relief frames since rejoining the Brewers.  Despite the solid performance, Wilson might just be a victim of a roster crunch, as selecting Richardson gives Milwaukee a fresher arm in the pen after Wilson tossed three innings in Friday’s 8-6 loss to the Twins.

A handshake agreement might be in place between Wilson and the Brewers to continue their relationship beyond this DFA, since Wilson is out of minor league options and thus can’t be removed from the active roster without first being exposed to waivers.  Assuming he clears waivers, Wilson could elect free agency and then quickly re-sign with the Brewers on a new contract, or he could just accept an outright assignment to Triple-A.  That said, it is certainly possible Wilson could get claimed away by another club in need of a swingman to eat some innings.

Richardson is now set for his first big league action since signing a minors deal with the Brewers in June.  Once he gets into a game, it will mark Richardson’s first MLB appearance with a team other than the Reds, who chose Richardson in the second round of the 2018 draft.  The righty has appeared in parts of the last four seasons, struggling to a 6.67 ERA, 17.2% strikeout rate, and a 14.6% walk rate across his 56 2/3 innings in the majors.

The results have been only a little better in Nashville, as Richardson has a 4.20 ERA, 22K%, and 14.2BB% in 30 innings for the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate.  This could be a cup of coffee-type of promotion just to give the Brewers some bullpen depth through the weekend, or perhaps at most until their next off-day on August 17.
