Brewers Facing Trade Decision After Willy Adames Report

After winning the National League Central in 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers have built on the success of last season, carrying a 43-26 record. Entering Tuesday’s series opener against the Cleveland Guardians, the Brewers hold a 4.5-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for first place in the NL Central.

Carrying one of baseball's smaller payrolls, Milwaukee has found success through an elite pitching staff, timely hitting, and contributions from throughout the roster. Ranking 27th in team home runs, yet 3rd in total runs, the Brewers have relied on sustained team traffic on the bases to lift them above higher-spending opponents.

However, as the season progresses, a glaring weakness has emerged for Milwaukee. Offensive production at shortstop has been an issue this season. 27-year-old Joey Ortiz has manned the shortstop position for the majority of the season, and while he continues to display his defensive abilities, his production at the plate has left much to be desired.

As the season continues, questions surrounding whether the organization should pursue an upgrade at shortstop, such as Willy Adames of the Giants, have only intensified.

According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, the San Francisco Giants are open to listening to offers on several veteran players ahead of the trade deadline, including Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman, and former Brewers shortstop Willy Adames. However, the organization reportedly has no intention of moving ace Logan Webb or its younger core pieces.

“The Giants are indeed open to offers for a number of their players including Rafael Devers, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames, per source,” Feinsand shared on X.

For Milwaukee, Adames represents far more than just another potential deadline acquisition. The veteran shortstop spent four seasons as the Brewers’ starting shortstop, departing to San Francisco in free agency in 2024 and signing a seven-year, $182 million contract.

While Adames is having an inconsistent season offensively, he would be a notable upgrade over Ortiz, who is currently slashing .207/.299/.262 with one home run. In 70 games this season, Adames is slashing .229/.274/.418 with 11 home runs.

The Brewers have rarely been an organization that makes splashy midseason additions, particularly given the financial limitations that come with operating in one of Major League Baseball's smallest markets. However, they have shown deadline aggression when the fit is right, going back to the original trade for Adames in May of 2021.

Whether the Brewers ultimately decide to engage with San Francisco remains to be seen, and the asking price could ultimately prove too steep. For a club that has World Series aspirations, a reunion with a proven leader and a track record of success in Milwaukee could still be worth monitoring.
