The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Reds on Friday by a score of 3-1, allowing the Phillies to inch within a game of the NL’s top spot (Brewers have the tiebreaker). The crowd at American Family Field didn’t have much to cheer about, but outfielder Jackson Chourio did provide a jolt by making his own MLB history in the bottom of the first inning.
Batting second behind new leadoff hitter Christian Yelich, Chourio drew his first of two walks in the game, a good sign from the free-swinging sophomore. He then stole second off Reds starter Zach Littell, and while the Brewers couldn’t bring him around to score, the successful swipe made Chourio the youngest player in MLB history to record his second 20-20 season.
Now with 20 steals and 20 homers on the dot, he made his mark at just 21 years, 199 days of age. Trout accomplished the feat on his 22nd birthday back in 2013.
Chourio’s sophomore season has not been without its lumps. He got off to a slow start, then picked it up in late May before missing nearly all of August with a strained hamstring. A corner outfielder by trade, he also had to spend major time in center field this season, starting 85 games there. With Blake Perkins back, Chourio has been able to play his normal position in left field while stepping in to man center as needed.
His overall offensive numbers are remarkably similar to last year: .269/.308/.458 (111 OPS+) versus .275/.327/.464 (118 OPS+). As a rookie, he hit 21 home runs, drove in 79, and stole 22 bases (caught seven times). With two games to go, he has 20, 77, and 20 in those categories this season – again caught stealing seven times.
The discrepancy in WAR – 2.0 in 2025 vs 3.8 in ’24 – likes comes in large part from not grading out as well defensively. Per statcast, he is still in the green with plus-one runs saved and it’s hard to blame him for any falloff. Forced to play out of position in perhaps the toughest position in the field, Chourio performed admirably.
Whatever the analtics say, he still has his flare. In center or left, wherever he’s been, he has pulled off more than one highlight-reel robbery this season.
