Every year it seems, there's one player that enters spring training as an afterthought given little chance of making the team who then shows up and shows out all spring and forces his way onto the major league roster.
The Milwaukee Brewers have a number of players like this, including Ji-Man Choi, Jesus Aguilar, Brad Nelson, Eric Haase, and so many others. Another one has just been added to the list.
As the Brewers continue to make final decisions on their roster to start the season on Thursday in New York, one player just got the call he's been waiting for.
Manager Pat Murphy told reporters on Sunday that he's informed infielder Vinny Capra that he's made the Brewers Opening Day roster.
This is not much of a surprise. Capra has dominated this spring, hitting a whopping five home runs with a 1.052 OPS. Capra has versatility at shortstop, second, and third. He's likely to be the Brewers utility infielder with the bulk of his playing time coming in a short side platoon at third base with Oliver Dunn.
It also makes sense for the Brewers to carry Capra as he is out of minor league options, meaning he'd have to be exposed to waivers if he didn't make the club. Given his spring, he'd be snapped up quickly. Murphy has also acknowledged a lack of depth in the infield and losing someone like Capra after his strong spring was not on the table.
It'll be the first Opening Day roster for Capra, and a well deserved one after his excellent spring.
