The Milwaukee Brewers strengthened their pitching staff during the All-Star break by acquiring veteran right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. from the Houston Astros. Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart first reported the deal on Wednesday as Milwaukee added another experienced arm for the second half.
The move comes with the Brewers leading the National League Central and looking to reinforce a rotation that has dealt with injuries. McCullers heads to Milwaukee after making eight starts for Houston this season.
The 32-year-old owns a 2-3 record with a 6.86 ERA, 43 strikeouts and a 1.52 WHIP across 39.1 innings. While the numbers have been inconsistent, the Brewers are betting the former All-Star can provide valuable depth and rediscover his form during the playoff push.

McCullers spent his entire major league career with the Astros, helping the franchise win two World Series championships. Injuries have limited him in recent years, but he remains one of the more experienced starters available on the market.
For Milwaukee, the addition comes as the club continues navigating uncertainty within its rotation. The Brewers have relied on strong pitching throughout the first half and now add another veteran with postseason experience.
The trade also signals a shift for Houston, which entered the break below .500 and outside the American League playoff picture. Moving McCullers gives the Astros additional roster flexibility as they evaluate their direction for the remainder of the season.
More details, including the full return heading to Houston, are expected once both clubs officially announce the transaction. Until then, McCullers appears set to begin the next chapter of his career with the Brewers.
