Brewers Outfielder To Miss Several Weeks in Devastating Injury News

The Milwaukee Brewers have already seen a couple of injuries this spring before Cactus League games have even started and now they've just seen one more.

The Brewers have a loaded outfield group, led by Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio and rounded out by first rounders and postseason heroes Garrett Mitchell and Sal Frelick plus the best defensive outfielder in the group Blake Perkins.

Last year, a spring training injury suffered by Mitchell completely changed the plans for the outfield and now this year there's another spring training injury that will alter the Crew's outfield plans before the season begins.

Blake Perkins out until May with broken shin

Blake Perkins, who was a Gold Glove finalist in centerfield last year, is going to be out until at least May with a fractured shin. Perkins suffered the injury in live BP, when he fouled a Freddy Peralta pitch off his shin.

Perkins will be shut down for the next 3-4 weeks before being able to get back into baseball activities.

Last season, Perkins hit .240/.316/.332 with 13 doubles, six homers, and 23 stolen bases. The 28 year old led the Brewers defensively with 11 Outs Above Average despite getting fewer defensive innings than most of the starters.

The Brewers were going to be relying on Perkins heavily this year, likely splitting time in centerfield with Garrett Mitchell. Mitchell's injury last year opened up more playing time for Perkins and now perhaps Perkins' injury will open up more time for Mitchell.

There's also Manuel Margot, a nine-year MLB veteran who signed a minor league pact with the Brewers yesterday. It's likely the Brewers brought in Margot already knowing Perkins was going to miss some significant time. Perkins' injury opens up a path for Margot to be a short-side platoon option with Mitchell in center at least until Perkins comes back.

This injury is a tough break for Perkins, who appears to be an ascending player and a key piece of the roster. The Brewers will be without him for at least a month as he recovers and an opportunity is now there for Margot to make an impression in Milwaukee.
