Brewers Re-Sign Bryse Wilson

The Brewers announced they’ve re-signed righty Bryse Wilson on a big league deal. The Pro Edge Sports Management client jumps right back into the bullpen after electing free agency yesterday. Milwaukee designated Lyon Richardson for assignment to create space on the active and 40-man rosters.

It’s essentially a reversal of Milwaukee’s move from last Saturday, when they selected Richardson’s minor league contract while designating Wilson for assignment. That was about availability rather than any issue with Wilson’s performance. He’d thrown three innings and 34 pitches on Friday, which would’ve taken him out for Saturday and likely the entire weekend.

Wilson has performed pretty well since signing with the Brewers shortly before the All-Star Break. He has taken the ball six times and worked 13 2/3 innings of four-run ball. Wilson has recorded 10 strikeouts without issuing a walk. He had one rough outing in San Francisco on July 29 but has otherwise been a competent source of mop-up innings.

The 28-year-old played a similar role in Milwaukee between 2023-24. He has had far more success in a Brewers uniform than with any other team. Wilson has a 3.37 ERA across 93 appearances with Milwaukee but has an ERA above 5.00 for every other club for which he’s pitched (excluding a one-off appearance for Philadelphia earlier this season). He has appeared for six teams overall, three this season alone. Wilson combined for three appearances between the Phillies and Cubs before circling back to Milwaukee.

Wilson is out of options, so he can’t be sent down without first clearing waivers. He has the right to elect free agency every time he clears. The Brewers knew this was the likely outcome when they designated him last week but can now plug him back into the bullpen as a fresh arm after three days rest.

It’s the same story for Richardson. The 26-year-old righty is also out of options and can elect free agency every time he clears waivers. He made his first and potentially only appearance with the Brewers last night. Richardson worked 1 2/3 scoreless frames with a walk and a strikeout to finish a 3-2 loss in San Diego. He came in just after Logan Henderson allowed a go-ahead home run to Jackson Merrill. Richardson did his job keeping the game close but Milwaukee wasn’t able to muster an equalizer against the elite back-end duo of Adrian Morejon and Mason Miller.

Richardson has pitched parts of four MLB seasons. Until last night, that had come entirely with the Reds — for whom he posted a 6.67 ERA over 56 2/3 innings. Richardson will go on waivers this week and seems likely to clear and test free agency, as he did after being designated for assignment by Cincinnati in June.
