Last week, the Milwaukee Brewers added a player who was recently designated for assignment to add some corner infield depth in the form of Bobby Dalbec. Today, they did the same in the outfield.
On Wednesday, the Brewers signed veteran outfielder Eddie Rosario to a minor league contract. He had been designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves just last Friday and elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A Gwinnett.
Rosario is an 11-year MLB veteran who has played for five different teams in his career and was on his third stint with the Braves. The Brewers would actually mark his third organization in 2025 alone as he was signed by the Dodgers before the season and DFA’d by them in late April.
The 33-year-old is a career .261 hitter with a .747 OPS, 201 doubles, 169 homers, and 583 RBIs in 1126 games. He also has a career 100 OPS+, which would consider him an exactly average hitter.
Well before the acquisition of Rosario, the Brewers found their outfield depth starting to dwindle. In fact, it started before the season even began when backup outfielder Blake Perkins kicked off the year on the injured list.
Another Milwaukee outfielder would eventually join him, this one a starter. Starting center fielder Garrett Mitchell was placed on the IL himself on April 26 with an oblique strain.
The Brewers recently added to their depth at the position when they signed Daz Cameron to a minor league deal and subsequently promoted him. He is 2-for-17 with nine strikeouts and a walk in 10 games with Milwaukee thus far.
Rosario hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire recently either. In 2024, he slashed just .175/.215/.316 in 91 games with both the Nationals and Braves.
But he isn’t that far removed from decent seasons either. In 2023, he hit .255 with a .755 OPS, 24 doubles, 21 homers, and 74 RBIs in 142 games for the Braves. He also was a World Series champion with them in 2021 when he earned NLCS MVP.
Taking a flyer on a player with a minor league deal is never a bad idea. That includes seeing if a veteran player can recapture some previous magic.
