Brewers Sign Veteran Corner Infielder To Minors Deal To Bolster Depth

The Milwaukee Brewers are lacking some major league ready depth in their infield. With Vinny Capra getting designated for assignment the other day and Andruw Monasterio being called up, there's just one infielder left on the 40 man roster that's not in the majors, which is Oliver Dunn.

The Brewers haven't been getting the production they've been looking for from the left side of their infield this year. Shortstop Joey Ortiz has struggled to a sub-.500 OPS to begin the year while the combination of Dunn/Capra/Caleb Durbin has failed to make a strong impression.

So the Brewers have signed a veteran infielder with third base experience.

Brewers Sign Bobby Dalbec

The Brewers have signed veteran corner infielder Bobby Dalbec to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Nashville, as reported by Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Dalbec was recently designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox after putting up a meager .222/.333/.278 slash line in just seven games this season.

Dalbec spent parts of the last five seasons in the majors with the Boston Red Sox, having his best season in 2021, when he hit .240 with 25 homers, 78 RBIs, and a .792 OPS. Since then, his production fell off.

Rafael Devers took over the long-term job at third base and Tristan Casas claimed the first base job, leaving Dalbec without a home in Boston. He'll now look to resurrect his once-promising career with the Brewers.

Dalbec is 29 years old and while he's primarily been a first baseman, he does have plenty of experience at third base. With the third base gig essentially still up for grabs in Milwaukee, Dalbec has a chance to earn that job and run with it.

First, he'll have to get into an offensive rhythm in Triple-A Nashville, but he won't be blocked in Milwaukee like he has been at his previous stops. It's a solid buy-low option for the Brewers to restock their infield depth and give themselves another potential candidate at third base.
