Byron Buxton Open To Waiving No Trade Clause

The Minnesota Twins sold a ton of pieces at the Deadline, trying to build a younger core and go into a full-blown rebuild. The one player who stayed amid all the trades was Byron Buxton, who publicly stated that he wanted to stay in Minnesota and wasn’t open to moving his no-trade clause. New reports indicate that he could now be open to waiving his no-trade to join a contending team this offseason.

Buxton Could Be On The Move

According to Dan Hayes of The Athletic, Byron Buxton may be open to waiving his no-trade clause for certain contenders if the Twins keep selling off pieces. Another notable name could be Joe Ryan. They were listening to offers on Ryan at the deadline, and I expect him to be moved in the coming weeks. Buxton would get a big package in return, as he’s under control for three more seasons.

Last season, Buxton hit .264, with 35 home runs and a .878 OPS. In 2025, he played 126 games, the second-most of his professional career. Injury concerns with him are in play every season, which is why Minnesota would be inclined to deal him. This past season, he dealt with hand and knee contusions, along with rib cage inflammation. The Twins dealt a ton of pieces in August, including Jhoan Duran, Harris Bader, and Griffin Jax.

Who Are The Top Suitors?

The Los Angeles Dodgers, who will look to win their third straight championship next season, are a great fit for Buxton. They are looking to add another outfielder, and are one of the few teams that can still mash if he misses time due to injury. The Dodgers also have the farm system to get a deal done with Minnesota.

The Philadelphia Phillies would also be among potential suitors. Dave Dombrowski made two big deals with the Twins at the trade deadline, and Buxton could be the perfect missing piece to the puzzle in their lineup. Philadelphia’s outfield looks rough heading into free agency, and Buxton (if healthy, and it’s a big if), would solve a lot of their problems.

Final Thoughts

The last team I’d put on the list is the New York Yankees. While they do have good young depth, their championship window is closing, and Buxton would be a great fit in center field. With the Yankees, it all depends on what happens with Cody Bellinger or any other free agent this winter. It’ll be fun to watch what the Minnesota Twins do this offseason, and whether or not they will try to add more young talent to the roster.
